Parameter: `ml_subscriber` · Category: Email marketing · Vendor: MailerLite

> ml_subscriber is **one of two tags the MailerLite newsletter service adds to links in the emails it sends**, with `ml_subscriber_hash`. MailerLite's tracking script on the destination site reads them. The names point at the subscriber who got the email, and LinkClean strips both on every site.

## What is known about them

The description this page relies on is a Brave browser issue opened in August 2021. It reports that MailerLite adds `ml_subscriber` and `ml_subscriber_hash` to outgoing links, and that the tracking script MailerLite recommends sites install reads the two values and sends them to MailerLite's servers through a tracking pixel.

The description here comes from that report, not from MailerLite. The names suggest a subscriber ID and a hash that goes with it, and that is an inference from the names.

## What they reveal when a link is forwarded

A newsletter link is sent to one subscriber. If the tags name that subscriber, forwarding the link hands the next reader's visit to your entry on the list. That is the reason to remove them before sharing.

## Does removing them break anything?

The same Brave issue notes that the unsubscribe link is built differently: it carries a base64 value in its path rather than these tags, which is why Brave judged them safe to strip.

## How LinkClean removes them

Default-on and global, both names. ClearURLs, AdGuard's filter and Brave strip them too.

## Example

Looks like this in a URL: `https://example.com/blog/spring-update?ml_subscriber=1234567890123456789&ml_subscriber_hash=a1b2c3d4e5f6`

After LinkClean: `https://example.com/blog/spring-update`

## Frequently asked

**Who adds ml_subscriber to a link?**

MailerLite, the newsletter service, on the links in emails sent through it.

**Does removing it break the unsubscribe link?**

Not according to the Brave report: the unsubscribe link carries its own value in the path and does not use these tags.

**Is it safe to remove ml_subscriber_hash?**

Yes. It is read by MailerLite's tracking script on the destination site. The page loads without it.
